“I feel it deep within
It's just beneath the skin
I must confess that I feel like a monster”
-Skillet
Most come into this world with a family. A father, a mother, or both. Even those not so fortunate may have a friend or significant other. But there are those who were conceived to experience nothing but misfortune. These two have lost their parents and are hated by the world for being genetic monstrosities, and so they returned that pain tenfold. The Wretched Egg, instigator of the Great Tokyo Earthquake. The One Eyed Owl, leader of the Ghoul terrorist cell known as Aogiri Tree. Today these two young women lash out and tear everything asunder in this DEATH BATTLE!
Before we start…
There isn’t much to say here, the series are quite straightforward with their canonicity and mediums. We’ll be using Deadman Wonderland’s Anime, OVA and obviously the Manga. For Tokyo Ghoul, we’ll also be using the different seasons of Anime and the two Manga (Tokyo Ghoul, Tokyo Ghoul: Re), regardless of the change of some specific events.
Background
Shiro
Rinichirou Hagire and Sorae Igarashi, incredibly talented scientists, started their research on new life forms called Nameless Worms in a way to improve a person’s immune system. But as every science matter, really messed up methods were used to experiment the effectiveness of the worms, requiring newborns as key pieces. Indifference was something both scientists held as professionals, such was the case that Sorae was willing to use her own newborn son Ganta, but deep within her gears changed, her mother instinct kicked in, refusing to use Ganta in any way. Issue is that the experiments needed to keep on, and in a desperate measure Sorae bought and adopted another baby from an unknown family, one whose skin was as white as snow, this was Shiro.
From a young age, Shiro was put under severe torture, meant to increase the number of Nameless Worms in her body, which ended up mutating and resulting in Shiro gaining the ability to use her blood, regenerate and cause deadly vibrations. Rinichirou, fascinated by these results, caused his mind to go insane and simply not stop his twisted desires to go beyond with the painful and monstrous experiments, Shiro was his perfect guinea pig.
In the very few times Shiro was free from any of this treatment, she got to meet with Sorae’s son Ganta, Shiro and Ganta became best friends, playing together as long as possible each day. Ganta eventually saw the cruel experimentation being done on Shiro, and in shock he fled, forgetting she even existed. Losing her only friend, Shiro attempted suicide with her abilities, causing one of Japan’s worst catastrophes in the recent years, the Great Tokyo Earthquake which sank 70% of Tokyo, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Her attempt failed, and as an answer Sorae created the Mother Goose System, reducing her power to not try this suicide again with a specific song, containing a tale about an unfortunate Woodpecker, ruining other’s lifes.
After this event, a huge prison was created to restrain some of the worst criminals, this was the Deadman Wonderland. Shiro was kept by Hagire Rinichirou, one of the few survivors from the earthquake. The horrible trauma and pain she had to overcome across years, spawned into her a ruthless and bloody alternate personality, Wretched Egg. Shiro, upon hearing of Ganta being close by, broke out of the prison, finding his new and happy life without her, causing this personality to kick right in and kill all of the classroom Ganta was in.
Ganta’s quest to take revenge upon Wretched Egg, find answers to this unjustified incarceration had him meet Shiro once again, not remembering her at first, finding odd she was willing to protect him at all costs, but eventually bring his memories back, issue is that it was only the happy and go-luck side from her, with no idea of this sick twist of fate. By the moment he discovered the horrible and difficult truth, in a final fight he defeated Hagire, but the expected happened and Mother Goose System was destroyed by Shiro herself, releasing all her power, Shiro and Ganta fought a last time, with Shiro’s personality turning into one once again and revealing her real desire, for her to be killed, specially by the person she loved the most.
Being the hero he always wanted to be for her, Ganta saved Shiro and gave her another chance in life, no matter her insisting wish to die, and with a final clash their crystals (origins of their powers) were both destroyed for once, destroying the Deadman Wonderland in its entirety.
Embracing a new life, where both could smile again, Shiro facing her sins in a prison, but after all and most importantly, alive, alive to listen to her own end of the Woodpecker’s song.
The rules of nature and reality are rather peculiar at times. They are completely and fully correct; undeniable no matter what anyone does. In the world of Tokyo Ghoul, this is no different, except nature has an added predator in the form of Ghouls. These superhuman creatures look exactly like humans, but are much stronger and deadlier, and those boons come from their cannibalistic diet of human flesh. Should they not dine, they will starve to death in an agonizing experience over a month, with no counter option available. This was exactly the predicament of Yoshimura and his lover Ukina, where one was a Ghoul, and one was a human. Due to their differing biologies, a child could not be born between man and Ghoul, on either side of the genetic lottery. Should a Ghoul mother become pregnant, the fetus will be mistaken for nutrients and devoured. In Ukina’s case, since she was human, and Ghoul’s needed flesh to survive, her baby would simply starve to death before she was born. Rather than resign her child to this, Ukina did the unthinkable, and ate flesh herself in order to give birth. The result of this action was Eto Yoshimura, and all she would come to know from this would be pain.
Her father, Yoshimura, was wrapped up in some shady affairs, and was forced to kill Ukina. Now with unmatched guilt and an infant daughter, it was too much for him, so he left Eto in the care of a Ghoul in the 24th Ward of Tokyo. Growing up with her mother’s diary, and forced to become a monster to survive in this area, Eto abandoned most if not all of her hope, and became just as much a monster in order to survive. She soon wished to shatter the world at large that birthed someone like her, because without any change, humans and Ghoul alike would never stop killing each other. After all, in order for a chick to hatch from its egg, it needs to break the shell to begin with. As such, Eto used her heritage as the daughter of Yoshimura, the One-Eyed Owl, and combined it with the lifestyle of a Kakuja Ghoul in order to grow her strength while slaughtering CCG members. Over time, she formed the Aogiri organization of Ghouls, whose only objective was to destroy and revolutionize the world in favor of Ghouls. During this time, she moonlighted as a human writer, Sen Takatsuki, whose projects received much praise from the part of the world she scorned.
Eventually, her actions of spearheading the organization would ensure she ran into one Ken Kaneki; a fellow One-Eyed Ghoul hybrid who was even a fan of her work. As her closest example of how wrong the world was, Eto battled Kaneki both morally and physically. Through this act, Eto even set him up to take her own place as the One-Eyed King, and helped him further while in custody of those who were manipulating all of this from the shadows to further dominate the world. In spite of that, and her own eventual death, Eto simply did what she always had; laugh in spite of the odds, spite everyone who stood in her way, and live like every day was her last. Truly, an attitude worthy of the kings of old, yet none would ever be like one such as Eto Yoshimura.

Branch of Sin
As a child, Shiro was repeatedly subjected to various painful nanomachine treatments by Sorae Igarashi and Rinichiro Hagire. What was simply an experiment meant to improve a human’s immune system resulted in a mutation that combined with the multiplication of the Nameless Worm would end up creating the first Branch of Sin, making her the original sin and progenitor of all Deadman.
Described as the ”super compression of matter caused by high-speed blood flow”, Shiro can control her own blood due to the link with the femtomachine in her body. The Nameless worm. Allowing her to weaponize her blood to destroy and compress things through this gravitational anomaly at a molecular level, and apply it in frankly devastating ways.
Blood Manipulation: Through her control of blood. Shiro can create multiple hexagonal tendrils that can cut and slash their targets to the point of disintegration, usually leaving circular holes. And is even capable of using them for defense by blocking attacks from close or long range or using them to lift large objects like submarines into the air.
Earthquake generation: By lifting her hand, Shiro can create small or large-scale earthquakes of various degrees that she can seemingly control. Enough to cause the entirety of the Deadman Wonderland Prison to shake and even later sink, or create an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 11.4 which sinked 70% of Tokyo at the very start of the series.
Nameless Worms Infection: After-effects of Shiro’s Earthquake caused the spawning of Nameless Worms which infected some people’s bloodstream, creating Deadmen.
Explosions: This one is a little more vaguely defined, but at times. The sheer force of Shiro’s branch of sin has shown to create massive explosions.
Wind manipulation: Through her hexagonal tendrils, Shiro can spin them fast enough to create large tornados with wind so deadly that it can shred and cut people up or destroy entire floors.
Flight
Shiro has shown the capability to levitate, jump high and fly through the air indefinitely. Presumably because of the previously described gravitational anomalies caused by the Branch of Sin.
Regeneration
Perhaps one of her more terrifying abilities Is her capability to regenerate. Due to the constant torture she was subjected to in her tests and her prior mutation, she began to develop regeneration at an accelerated rate. Allowing her to heal from immense wounds like being stabbed by a knife, having blood vessels pop, broken bones, massive holes in her body or having organs or body parts like her heart or fingers harvested from her.
Alternate Personalities
Given her extremely traumatic past, being subjected to painful experiments, and the loneliness of losing Ganta for a big part of her life, Shiro developed alternate personalities as a coping mechanism; some of these personalities can sometimes switch at random and even have internal discussions.
Shiro
A childlike and playful personality who loves candy and usually accompanies Ganta, sometimes saving him on several occasions. While she typically isn’t combative, Shiro isn’t sometimes afraid to throw down herself if things get serious. She seems to retain some abilities from her Wretched Egg self, like superhuman strength, regeneration and some limited control over the Branch of Sin. Though this can lead to the Wretched Egg taking over.
Wretched Egg
A cold hearted personality driven by blood lust, what happens when an egg is alone for a while? It rottens. Wretched Egg is the product of the ruthless experiments and pain Shiro suffered across her life, a facade of strength entirely based on her childhood hero, Aceman. Wretched Egg drives her absolutely insane to the point where her morality goes to waste, not hesitant to kill Ganta’s classmates, friends or even Ganta himself. This personality normally kicks off at extreme and shocking situations, where Shiro’s mental state gets affected and she is not able to control herself.
Wretched Egg holds control over her Branch of Sin’s powers at the maximum potency due this destructive nature, coming in handy with her absurd regeneration increased by pain tolerance. This factors, kick a suicidal tendency at her worst, as overexerting this power could end up killing her, something she deeply desires.
Merged
At the climax of the series, both personalities of Shiro seem to combine into a single one. Albeit a plot point is how in fact, Shiro was always the same and completely aware of her mistakes in the “Wretched Egg” facade.
You could take this as “Real Shiro”, one that is not binded to the Mother Goose System and its lullaby created by Sorae Igarashi, which seems to have influenced this personality disorder represented by Shiro’s internal world equal to a Piano.
Resistances
Poisons and viruses: Since part of the aim of Sorae and Hagire’s experiments were to improve the human’s immune system. Shiro’s immune system even at a young age was capable of warding off incredibly dangerous viruses or pathogens inserted into her body. This also includes resistances to toxins that target her bond with her Branch of Sin, like the Worm Eater. A blade which negates a branch of sin when slicing it. Or the deadly toxin from the Ninben, which causes a person’s muscles to burst and explode from the inside.
Heat(to an extent): After sneaking into a guard tower and causing its explosion, Shiro was practically unphased by fire surrounding her entire body. And in a similar case later on, when being caught off-guard by an explosion, the heat of it didn’t seem to affect her (Or Ganta for that matter). This can also be supported by Karako, who using her Branch of Sin held a notable resistance against Necro Macro’s heat beam, which melted people instantly.

Eto Yoshimura
Half-Ghoul Physiology
It is said that when a Human and a Ghoul cross-breed, a half-ghoul with a single black eye with much greater capabilities than typical humans or ghouls is born due to hybrid vigor/heterosis. Though due to the exceeding rarity of pregnancy even those who knew of this have deemed this an urban legend. But Eto was merely one of the exceptions to the rule, as her human mother Ukina forced herself to engage in cannibalism so that she would survive. Resulting in Eto lasting enough for her to be born.
As a One-Eyed Ghoul, Eto was born physically superior to several of her full blooded kin. Albeit not too dissimilar from them in abilities, Ghouls already naturally have superhuman abilities that surpass human capabilities. Possessing muscles that generate 4 or 7 times more kinetic energy than a human. Making them capable of accomplishing superhuman feats such as being able to destroy concrete or rip people apart, move faster than the eye can see, have skin so tough that sharp weapons like knives/bonesaws bend or break on contact, including lead bullets. And the ability to take great leaps with a single jump.
All of this great power in part is due to RC Cells(Red Children Cells), cells which are in both ghouls and humans but are found in abundance within the former. To compare an average human’s RC level would be between 200/500, while an average ghoul would possess over 1000 or 8000 RC in comparison. Showing quite a stark difference between their capabilities. RC Cells in particular flow like blood and can be molded into Kagune. These organic “appendages” will release from 1 of 4 spots on the body. Kagune size depends on the Rc cells’ quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user. Eto is rather creative, and can reshape her Kagune at will.
Enhanced Senses
Ghouls like Eto have an excellent sense of smell and hearing. Eto was able to detect what was occurring during Kaneki’s second battle with Arima, all the way from her cell. She also trained Hinami, who can hear subtle sounds across a city. Her hearing is so good she can tell a person’s mass from the loudness of footsteps, texture from tone, sound reflection in the environment, form from rhythm, and the vibration Kagune gives off.
Flesh Consumption
While Ghouls aren’t too far away from humans in appearance, their physiological differences could not be any more different. As a carnivore species they are incapable of digesting or tasting most human food in the same way humans do without vomiting outside of coffee. So in order to sate their hunger and be in peak physical condition all the time they usually tend to feast on humans. With a bite force strong enough to bite and break Quinque steel, they can replenish their energy overtime or boost their strength. Even with just the slightest bite of meat being able to keep them fighting and kickstart their regeneration. On one occasion in Cochlea, Furuta like the effed up freak he is offered Eto the remains of her former editor in the form of a not so tasty dish of Pâté made of human flesh(don't ask), and that dish was just enough to let her fight and transform her Kakuja into a stronger version.
In times of desperation, Ghouls have even resorted to cannibalizing their own kind just to get a boost or even have bitten themselves just to recover, though it doesn’t replenish them as much as human meat does. However the catch to all of this is that they require this sustenance in order to use many of their abilities to act as a sort of fuel, and if a Ghoul doesn't eat for a long time due to poor diet or they receive heavy damage. Their abilities will eventually degrade over time to the point their healing ability will be affected and they can’t fight back.
Regeneration
Like all Ghouls, Eto can regenerate from harmful wounds. Her healing however is on a whole other level from other Ghouls. Eto can laugh off getting cut in two and overtime casually regenerate her lower half, and can even regenerate her head back after having it cut off. Eto’s Kagune implants gave Kanae the ability to return her severed head to her neck.
Weather Ghouls have also shown the ability to reattach or regrow entire sections and vital areas of their bodies back in place, even after being completely sliced in two. This includes deep wounds to eyes without issue or fixing a broken neck immediately after it is broken.
Ukaku Kagune
As mentioned prior, Ghouls have a predatory organ used for combat which are as sturdy as steel. Eto’s Kagune is known as an Ukaku, a wing type Kagune that releases from the shoulders. Ukakus’ specialize in high speed attacks, making them quite effective in long and close ranged combat. Eto uses hers to fire crystal like projects that carve through humans like butter. She can reshape them into a swarm of grotesque arms with mouths. She can remove her kagune from her body to act separately from her or use small pieces to empower other Ghouls, like Kanae.
Ukaku Kakuja
Through cannibalism, a Ghoul absorbs Rc cells, and this increases the concentration of Rc cells within a ghoul's body. If the concentration becomes high enough, it may trigger a mutation, which leads to the formation of an entirely new Kakuhou through the body, thus creating a new Kagune. This process gives Ghouls a sort of “super form”. This transformation can drive a Ghoul insane. Eto’s kakuja was a massive version of this.
Eto’s Kakuja stands several meters tall and can destroy helicopters by merely making contact with them. She can still fire crystal projects and is even seemingly capable of absorbing them to shoot them right back to sender, or create multiple Kagune tendrils. She is also rather agile in this form and can climb buildings rather easily. Likely due to her massive RC Cell reserves, Eto can generate shockwaves and fire a laser that can destroy buildings. Eto’s main body is the head section of the giant monster, and she can restore damaged parts of the organic titan.
Resistances
Electricity: Eto can withstand Arima’s lightning Quinque and is not paralyzed by it
Extreme Heat: Kagune can resist and block 4000 Degrees Celcius flames, and Ghouls like Takizawa weren’t too much affected by being blasted by said stream of flames directly in the face. Eto is comparable to Takizawa, as his genetic base is her Father.
Biological Manipulation (Cellular level): Ghouls like Takizawa can redirect explosive cells attempting to invade his body.
Madness Manipulation: Ghouls overtime grow more and more likely to become crazy from eating their own kind with it being dubbed the “Power of Madness”. Eto is unaffected by this.

Weaknesses
Shiro
Across the story, Deadman Wonderland’s prison nerfed her with the Mother Goose System, which was created with her organs and possessed a lullaby with a frequency that nerfed her maximum power, if the frequency was at its highest it could permanently sleep it all.
Given her suicidal tendencies, Shiro wouldn’t really hesitate in overexerting this power in a way to kill herself, shown with Great Tokyo Earthquake. Even in the final fight against Ganta with the Merged Personality, she’d be willing to let herself take the attacks.
Shiro’s happy go lucky personality, despite the limited control over Branch of Sin is not really as strong and this shows too with the time it took her to recover from one of the Undertakers attacks.
Eto Yoshimura
Despite her potent regeneration factor, Eto can still be mortally wounded should she receive too much damage. In this sense, she needs time for her regeneration to stabilize her condition, and long battles without any nourishment tends to slowly but surely wear down a Ghoul’s healing factor. Furthermore, despite having multiple Kakuhou throughout her body, should all be destroyed she will be left with her healing factor greatly impaired and without the ability to use a Kagune or Kakuja. Eto’s large Kakuja also makes it a large target for attacks.
Scaling
Shiro
Ganta Igarashi
Childhood friends turned enemies by fate, Ganta and Shiro ended up being very comparable at the end of the series. Homever it’s always been clarified that Shiro is undeniably stronger than him for a majority of the series, major example being from childhood, even in the final fight despite Ganta’s efforts it is implied again how she’s still stronger, with his major tool being the willpower and how his power was meant to be Anti-Shiro.
Using his Branch of Sin, Ganta destroys a huge concrete ball falling on top of him. (0.889 Tons, Small Building) -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 1
Does this again to save Shiro at the end of the series. -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 56

Ganta’s Ganbare Gun destroys the entirety of Carnival Corpse Arena. -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 25 (215 Tons, Multi City-Block)
Ganta withstands stimuli-based torture upon his very nerves. -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 30
Deadman
Across the series Ganta has allied himself with different Deadmen in the prison. All who he fought and defeated. And across all their showings, none of them came close to Shiro’s overwhelming power.
On his first appearance, Senji slices clean across a huge wall and Necro Macro. -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 5

As the true mastermind and head of Deadman Wonderland, Hagire has failed again and again to replicate Wretched Egg’s power, was assassinated in his second body by Shiro, and as previously mentioned Deadmen and Ganta were able to kill him while using Toto Sakigami’s body, one of the deadliest Deadmen who could replicate all of their abilities except Ganta’s.
Toto was able to effectively kill one of the Ningen. -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 25

Rinichirou slices apart Chan and En’s body along with Senji’s arm without any of them noticing. -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 48
Using one of his techniques, throws Ganta across several floors. -Deadman Wonderland (Manga): Chapter 49
Eto Yoshimura
Ken Kaneki (somewhat)
While Eto did lose her battle against Kaneki during the Tsukiyama raid arc prior and definitely should not be as strong by the point of when he became dragon and gains his post-dragon kagune. She should at the very least be comparable to his Post-Cochlea state and far surpass any feats done by his Post-Aogiri self. As she has been able to injure Juuzou Suzuya while he was wearing Arata Joker, and Juuzou along with Hanbeh barely just so managed to defeat Kaneki.

Aogiri Tree
As the founder and strongest member of the Aogiri Tree, Eto should certainly be above her lower ranked S or SS-Rate subordinates. And she has even saved members like Ayato from death on some occasions.
Gagi and Guge save Naki from bullets (Mach 9.6, Hypersonic) -Tokyo Ghoul :re(Manga): Chapter 21
Naki deflects a bullet -Tokyo Ghoul :re(Manga): Chapter 127

Ghouls
Given she was already born stronger than your average ghoul at birth, and has a higher ghoul rank by the CCG. It’s no surprise that she’d be superior or comparable to most ghouls across the series, having easily defeated Ghouls from the Tsukiyama family or blitzed ghouls without her Kakuja. To top it off, there’s the time a group of ghouls and investigators teamed to fight her corpse being controlled by Donato. Despite their efforts to shield the Investigators, their Kagune started eventually giving out from all of Eto’s attacks.

CCG Investigators & Quinxes
Even before forming the Aogiri Tree, Eto had already a reputation of giving the CCG plenty of hassle as the One-Eyed Owl. Making her be ranked as an SSS Ghoul threat by the Counteragency, and not without good reason. Ghouls are already physically much stronger than most humans or even the Quinx, humans who have a kagune implanted in them and have a RC Cell count lower than 1,000(the average level of a ghoul). She’s also already wiped the floor with some of the most skilled investigators, injuring some of the strongest Special Investigators such as Juuzou, Kuroiwa or Shinohara while they were under their respective Arata armors. And even after teaming up with several ghouls to stop her, none of them had the capability to exactly kill her. So with the exact exception of Arima(who always defeats her), Eto should be superior to most investigators.

Before Verdict
About Great Tokyo Earthquake
The incident that caused everything in Deadman Wonderland’s story as we know it. This earthquake with a Seismic Potency of 11.4, caused 70% of Tokyo to be underwater, over 148, 000 casualties and the spawning of Deadmen, Japanese citizens from Kanto Region infected with Nameless Worms who are able to manipulate their blood as a weapon. The responsible for this? None else than Shiro herself. This was an attempt for Shiro to end with her life, without considering any of the consequences. Regardless of the attempt, thanks to her regeneration she survived, seeing that Sorae created the Mother Goose System (Explained in the weaknesses section) .
Something interesting about Sorae, is that she managed to survive the incident using a Red Diamond that is stated to block her powers, Mother Goose System holds this same Red Diamond, directly on all her flesh and sliced parts. At the very beginning of the story Shiro injected Ganta this same Red Diamond, one could argue that this means the Diamond’s characteristics act as a way to nullify the power, and while technically this is true is only to an extent, after all it acts with physical involvement, as an explanation after a brief research is that this Red Diamond consumes muscles and nerves, causing a no-pain sensation which one way or the other would make sense on why Shiro’s powers (heavily linked to her physicality and cells) would be weakened, majorly targeted through the frequency it emits with the Lullaby. And this is not something out of nowhere, as one of the analyses with the Mother Goose System implied the weakening can occur through a cellular reaction, further increased by Shiro’s remains on the inside of the system.
This is important to explain, because even if Shiro was nearly at the venge of death doesn’t mean she cannot fight against characters whose strength and muscle power should be more than comparable or equivalent to the full value.
For this full value, a couple of things should be considered. And is that as mentioned in this scan of the earthquake it happened over 0,5 km underground, and the showcase within Shiro’s flashback, shows her in a building. Going by the 11.4 (Mercalli in this case), you could determine it can get over 200.8 Gigatons (Large Island Level) or 1.9 Teratons (Small Country). But this could have its problems, mostly due the actual effect it generated within Tokyo and this is what should matter over most. You can get all sorts of different ends for the sinking, and should hit similar results and shouldn’t be too crazy, while you can definitely assume this is moreso an over the time thing (as Japan is already destroyed from the event), all fear that her power can “destroy all Japan”.
Homever, something that definitely adds up to the feat is the anime portrayal, where a storm is seen when this event happens (Deadman Wonderland (Anime) Episode 6) (413 Kilotons of TNT, Large Town). This happens more or less due to censorship, named “Red Hole” in the anime, and the event caused all of Tokyo to sink (Deadman Wonderland (Anime) Episode 8).
Still don’t believe it? Well, at very minimum in-verse it is suggested an earthquake of her magnitude would need to be at least 50 Megatons, this happening meanwhile Tamaki was explaining a way of how this could even theoretically happen.
Verdicts
Giotto
Oh shit, new Giotto blog? How is this possible????!!!!!! Yep, that’s right, no more delaying buddies!!! Ever since I finished Deadman Wonderland, I always wanted to create a blog with any of the characters, and this was the perfect chance after having Cyber support me on cooking something.
This idea is unique, while it already existed it barely got paid attention or at least when speaking of Shiro herself, who’s normally brought against Crona (nothing against the match, it’s actually quite good). So I wanted to showcase all of my love and appreciation for the franchise, placing it against a franchise which I have been more interested in recently, being Tokyo Ghoul. I understand why Kaneki is the main character brought up in all the popular ideas , easily the one who’s got the most to talk about, but when it comes to this type of known franchises I’ve always thought getting spotlight to key characters from said story that aren’t necessarily the protagonist are interesting, specially with their sheer amount (Touka, Juuzou, Amon, Arima, Ayato, having potential for great hypothetical blogs but always buried under Kaneki’s two big options).
Getting the yapping away, for the verdict I don’t really consider there’s toooooooo much to talk about. But there’s some interesting points you could make when placing some lenses in each other’s feats, abilities and resistances.
Starting with stats right off the bat, in terms of Attack Potency and Strength, Eto’s compactor feat is actually super impressive, getting around 240 Kilotons of TNT, or Large Town. This makes sense given her Kakuja’s immense size which even by Kinetic Energy should be a behemoth, colliding with helicopters and instantly destroying them or hell, creating several building sized explosions, she’s definitely nothing to scoff at, at least when comparing her to the rest of the verse is understood why she’s such a threat when no other feat in terms of AP comes close. Issue is that well, uhhhhhhh, Shiro kinda blows her a bit too much out of the water in this regard, being the literal first Deadman (woman) to exist, she’s essentially the best of the best and nobody has ever come close to replicate what is to sink pretty much all of Tokyo with Earthquake scales which reach beyond ridiculous scales of 11.4, which end up giving a force of 1.9 Teratons, or Small Country.
Even for Tokyo Ghoul’s end feats from Kaneki’s Dragon which Eto does not scale, and is to note than general even if the compactor is a good feat with her size alone, despite Shiro’s notably smaller size she’s rather explosive, after all with just toying around a bit she caused Deadman Wonderland to almost be destroyed entirely, a prison covering notable part of a small island. Both feats obviously considering that she’s unreleased, not factoring Mother Goose System for this which would be rather strange given we’re using them at maximum potential. But funnily enough, I don’t think this really matters on long run, as even with the system active, Shiro’s earthquakes have been stated to be at least 15% of their original power, a rough calc means this would at least be 285 Gigatons, similar to the end given on VSBW for the feat, and doesn’t matter if you downgrade this either, every single would be a lot better than Eto, so yes Shiro easily takes this aspect.
For Speed, things change a bit. Speed for the longest in Deadman Wonderland used to be around Supersonic, and narratively it’s the speed with the most mentions, inferior Deadmen to Shiro like Senji or Minatsuki are able to slice at the speed of sound and superior, being a requirement to blitz Undertakers weapons called Worm Eaters. Ganta learnt this technique with his supersonic projectiles, and has used it several times against Shiro across the story, but perhaps the best shown of consistently good speed is yet again from Senji, who’s precision allowed him to slice bullets at very much centimeters off him, which gets around Mach 132 at maximum.
Tokyo Ghoul meanwhile is no stranger to reacting to bullets, soundwaves and having characters blitz each other all the time, casual investigators like Amon are able to go so fast rain cannot catch them, easily being Mach 26. What carries them however in this aspect, is Arima’s ridiculous Qinque which okay, is been debated countless times whether this ability is actually usable given it’s strange nature that could not imply real lightning is used, but considering imagination is what drives Kagunes effects on another Ghouls I think is only fair to assume it’s real, for a further explanation Eren vs Kaneki’s blog from Round (who collaborated on this blog) does a better job at explaining this. The thing is, pretty much a bunch of characters have reacted to this ability, including Eto herself that can get results of Mach 466, and this is not factoring characters like Ayato, who can get over Mach 4623, placing Senji’s feat at a borderline ridiculous state. So in contrast, Eto takes this aspect.
For Durability, I think this one is kinda tricky and heavily ties directly to their abilities, so I’ll combine this to give a final thought. For most of Deadman Wonderland, Shiro’s playful and cheering personality has suffered fatal damage that takes time to recover, not being able to properly stand or do much when having legs broken, Eto not having this issue could take advantage regardless of what Shiro could do with a weakened Branch of Sin, as even if Shiro remains massively stronger, considering the size of some of Shiro’s compressed attacks could mean Eto can recover at an abnormally faster rate. But this again, comes down to the weakening partly fault of Mother Goose System, and partly from the happy personality.
Meanwhile Wretched Egg and Merged Shiro are able to regenerate quite fast, and their power increases insanely, killing regular Shiro is not an option as this could trigger those personality states way easier, and assuming Eto manages to scratch and consume parts of Shiro to gain a power boost, even taking in consideration her insanely better speed she’d only be opening her death wish the moment Wretched Egg decides to kick some of the bloodthirsty tendencies and cause her Branch of Sin to create explosions, who hold the “molecular” destruction factor among them, being big enough to engulf Eto’s Kakuja size, disintegrating her into nothingness, and this is not something Eto is ready to take on, as even with the Biological Manipulation affecting her to such level and Eto resisting it, this is something Ninben at some point of the story have more or less done so, with interacting directly with body structure due the poison, yet failed to be a match for Shiro’s ability.
Even assuming Eto completely bisects and devours several parts of happy Shiro on good time, a younger Shiro has been chopped into pieces and managed to return, in an unknown timeframe but for sure it’s the thing, and boosts can run down at any second, in series the power increases aren’t exactly the best either way, is not like she’s going to be automatically granted Shiro’s stats or something like that, it just keeps Ghouls functioning as a battery, and the moment Shiro locks in, without Eto being able to do more lasting damage, is over. All of this is of course by the way playing partly Devil’s Advocate for Eto’s case, as at the end of series Shiro without any power managed to survive Deadman Wonderland’s explosion in its entirety, causing an explosion seen several meters from afar.
With all of this said, I think the idea has some interesting things to think of for interactions. But undoubtedly, Shiro is just too strong, too durable, holds the range to kill Eto on spot and with abilities powerful enough to stomp Aogiri Tree’s Founder to nothingness. So yeah, Eto’s kind of a Deadwoman here, as Shiro is feasting a Ghoulish dish. The winner is Shiro.
T0m
Hello chat, I'm back again for one of these. First off, I must once again thank my longtime friend Giotto for offering me the opportunity to work on this on DMs. As a fan of Deadman Wonderland, I've been wondering when it would get its own blog at some point and if it would get more attention. Especially when most of the attention to it has been in the context of Crona vs Shiro prior(outside of Jolyne vs Ganta more recently, great match btw), not that the match is bad but there’s so much more to speak about it. As for Tokyo Ghoul itself, I used to be put off by it since I thought it was overly edgy from outside impressions from the anime. How could i be more wrong once i read it honestly, it’s definitely a great series filled with great themes and great characters like Kaneki, Juuzou, Touka or Eto(wish she did more…). Who are some of my favs. And I enjoyed my time with it while working on this, speaking of that. This one took quite a while because of me being busy with other blogs and college.
What do I think of the match? I wasn’t initially too excited about it due to my lack of knowledge on Tokyo Ghoul and the idea always was sorta sitting there for me. I eventually grew to like it and it’s probably up there as one of my favorite ideas for Shiro along with Lucy from Elfen Lied now. And I hope to sell more people on it.
Enough yapping though for now, let’s get to discussing who I think wins. And to be honest, while Eto is indeed without her advantages. If you paid attention it’s not surprising to see why the Wretched Egg cooks the One Eyed-Owl like an omelet and let’s get to why. I’ll divide these into 5 categories to explain their advantages and disadvantages.
Strength
Let’s go over Eto first. Being among some of the strongest Ghouls within her series, especially with the size of her gigantic Kakuja that grows overtime. It’s not surprising to see she’d display some incredible feats of strength within the series, enough to injure some of the strongest investigators in series or give trouble to Ghouls from the Tsukiyama family just with her. Who are comparable to ghouls like Touka, and she can destroy pieces of the Dragon formation while she was searching for Kaneki. Generating up to 7-23 tons of TNT(City block). Though this is baby stuff in comparison to Eto’s own feat, destroying the compactor made out of incredibly tough Quinque steel from Cochlea. To crush such a large trap would generate up anything between 5.13 to 240 kilotons of TNT. Especially impressive considering Eto had RC suppressants at the time, which did somewhat weaken her.
As for Shiro herself, the same sort of logic applies here. With the terrifying reputation of the Wretched Egg preceding her she has displayed some terrific levels of strength, having easily tossed massive ships weighing as much as 3,200 tons with her Branch of Sin. Or the ability shown to match and overpower other Deadmen like the Woodpecker, Ganta Igarashi. Who can destroy the top of buildings and has made a mess of the Carnival Corpse Arena, albeit by accident. This would be up to 215 tons of TNT, enough to destroy multiple city blocks. But this doesn’t hold a candle to some of Shiro’s own feats, like all the numerous earthquakes and explosions she’s made. One such example is of course the Great Tokyo Earthquake at the start of the series, creating a seismic intensity of 11.1. Which sank 70% of Tokyo, while timeframes on this feat do seem nebulous. Results seem to vary between 200.8 gigatons/1.9 Teratons(Island level/Country). With some theoretical estimates in-verse as to how this could happen putting up to 50 megatons.
And don’t forget, while Shiro was weakened by the Mother Goose System for a majority of the story. This is no longer the case after she destroyed the Mother Goose System. So even comparing their direct feats and scaling from Touka and Ganta, Eto had no way to particularly match in overall power even with ways to boost herself. Giving Shiro a clear advantage in destructive capability by many times.
Shiro takes this category.
Speed
Now going to speed is where it gets interesting. Both series have numerous impressive showings of speed, with characters such as Amon or Senji being faster than sound or having shown plenty of impressive bullet timing. So on paper they should be equal right? not exactly.
To compare, Senji has displayed incredible feats such as creating sonic booms with or moving fast enough to avoid two bullets fired from two opposite sides. Making him 132 times faster than the speed of sound at maximum. However multiple Ghouls throughout the series such as Ayato, Kaneki, Renji or even Eto herself have shown to consistently react and block lightning from Quinques. With their results(anything from Mach 286 to Mach 4623 at reasonable ends) being higher by a decent gap or many times faster than Senji’s feat. So ironically Eto should have the capability to react and move much faster than the Wretched Egg.
Eto takes this category.
Durability
To play devil’s advocate for a bit. It is true that Shiro’s durability may seem somewhat inconsistent at first glance, especially with her more playful and less powerful personality. Having been stabbed by knives or sometimes having her leg broken by lesser. So maybe there could be an argument that her durability isn’t that great and Eto could feed off her to get stronger, maybe. Meanwhile Ghouls naturally have a durability that allows them to withstand stabbing weapons, bullets and even explosions.
I personally don’t agree with this notion as Shiro’s survived plenty of crazy shit as the Wretched Egg and her Merged personality, like withstanding Ganta’s branch of sin at many times throughout the story. Surviving being at the center of her own earthquakes and explosions, and surviving the entire Deadman Wonderland exploding from having her branch of sin explode right in her face. And both her and Ganta survived. So Eto simply can’t land a single solid killing blow on Shiro to circumvent this difference.
Shiro takes this category.
Abilities
When it comes to comparing their abilities. I think Shiro and Eto have their own specific advantages. Eto possibly has much better regeneration since she can regrow her decapitated head or having her lower half obliterated(provided she has the required sustenance). In contrast to Shiro who can just regrow organs, stab wounds or repair broken limbs. And her enhanced senses paired with her great speed would allow her to sense some of Shiro’s attacks in anticipation.
Eto’s Kagune has a bit more versatility and ways to play at range with her tentacles, crystal projectiles, shockwaves, building busting lasers and even her gigantic Kakuja. But the branch of sin gives Shiro much more reliable options and range to control the battlefield in the long game. Her hexagonal tendrils can extend pretty far to cut through Eto and even summon tornados with wind so sharp it can cut, cause massive island spanning earthquakes, explosions or much better mobility than what’s shown for Eto’s Kakuja through her flight.
And despite her superior speed, Eto’s Kakuja still makes her an incredibly big target and Is suited to taking on big crowds of enemies to endure through attacks. Making it likely that she would not outrun many of her attacks even with her being able to sense them. Which is especially bad considering Shiro’s branch of sin compresses and destroys matter at a molecular level, usually leaving circular holes in place with no remains when it cuts up an object. Giving Shiro the capability to fully disintegrate Eto into nothing, which is very likely with Shiro’s destructive superiority. And it’s not like Eto’s regeneration has allowed her to return from having her body fully eviscerated, consistent damage to Ghouls have shown to slow down their healing factors and even physically impair them.
Shiro takes this category.
Skill and Experience
Taking their backgrounds into account, l think Eto has a more impressive track record in terms of her skill, tactics and combat history. While Shiro is no stranger to combat and has been able to overpower plenty of Deadmen, mechs or Ninben. Most of her encounters tend to happen every now and then, she's also far more reckless and destructive when it comes to utilizing her powers. Eto meanwhile has fought the CCG and fought some of their most skilled investigators by a young age, before forming and leading the Aogiri tree along with Tatara just behind the scenes. And has displayed greater control over her Kagune and Kakuja than most ghouls who usually go mad.
Eto takes this category.
Conclusion
So overall, while Eto is not without her advantages. Having greater skill, experience, ways to play at range and much better regeneration. But Wretched Egg was simply way too much of a tough egg for The One Eyed-Owl to even crack, even if Eto did gain a single boost. This would not be enough to circumvent the gap. So with her terrifying superiority in power, greater control over the battle with her numerous abilities and flight. Shiro had eggs-actly owl she needed to rip all of the branches in this tree for Eto to stand on.
Cyber
Greetings! Here we have my second favorite character (Eto) from my favorite manga against Shiro, my favorite character from Deadman Wonderland. I did not get a chance to contribute as much as I wanted to, but nonetheless I’ll give a quick take on who I think wins.
Shiro and Eto both have really good lifting strength feats, lifting a submarine and massive steel cylinders. Eto’s best showing gets 240 Kilotons of TNT. Scaling to Ayato gets her to 2.6% SOL (which is a high ball).
In comparison, while Shiro is much slower, her AOE and power put Eto to Shame. She can produce blasts that reach 200 Gigatons to 1.9 Teratons of TNT, enough to vaporize Eto.
Eto likely takes experience and fighting skill. Both have comparable Regeneration, though Eto can survive decapitation. Regardless, Shiro outclasses in power to such an extent that she wins off that alone. The winner is Shiro.
Summary
Shiro
"The always naughty woodpecker. Today, too, you open holes and ruin the forest. The angry wood god turned your beak to poison. Poor woodpecker, your nest has been poisoned. Your food has been poisoned. If you touch your friends, they all die. The sad little woodpecker. Your tears of poison sparkle brightly..."
Advantages:
Massively stronger than anything in Tokyo Ghoul.
Earthquakes and explosions grant her a lot more range.
Her fly gives her a mobility advantage.
Should get around Eto’s regeneration with Branch of Sin’s molecular deconstruction
Disadvantages:
Slower, even with the highest end for Senji’s feat.
While she has a great regeneration, it can take some time.
Willing to let herself take attacks more often (Albeit debatable depending in the opponent)
Eto Yoshimura
"That time, while making sure I would not be noticed by anyone (not even Father), I secretly and quietly rewrote the summary. One can only destroy things one cannot change. This is so for me, a person who left in the womb everything that was needed."
Advantages:
Should be faster by a good margin thanks to Arima and Ayato’s scaling, surpassing any end of Senji’s bullet feat.
Faster and generally more impressive regeneration.
More skilled and experienced.
Disadvantages:
Way too inferior physically.
Massive kakuja size makes her a big target to hit
Even with her regeneration, she holds no resistance towards Branch of Sin’s molecular deconstruction.
Final tally
Team Shiro: Giotto, T0m, Cyber (3)
Team Eto: (0)
Some Words + Next Time
First of all, a callout to T0m and Cyber for helping me a ton with the research for this one, I never could have made it without you both homies and the hours dedicating it to this small funny project. Second, up to thank Round1Fight and his blog on Eren vs Kaneki, most of the calcs and Arima’s Narukami Lightning explanation is all here! Their research made the consistency of it be fine enough at least to this blog’s standards, so check it out, for real.
Third, as you may all guess this was a replacement to the initially planned Makoto vs Medaka Blog which was announced previously, unfortunately the future of it is uncertain, despite being a beloved idea of mine, after reflexing about it I’d prefer to keep it on hold-on, and postpone it indefinitely until I feel sure enough of working on it.
So what does that mean for the Next Time? What is it gonna be, Giotto-sama??
Well, I know many are going to be enthusiastic about it, after all it is a beloved idea both by a big part of the community and myself included.
Watch for yourself!
NEXT TIME ON GIOTTO’S PREDICTION BLOGS!
